Mara-Papiyas, presiding over the sixth heaven of the desire realm, is compassionate, and enjoys great blessings, with supernatural powers beyond imagination.

Why does he obstruct other's accomplishment? He considers himself the highest king of the desire realm, and doesn't want his subjects to leave him. Anyone breaks free from the wheel of samsara means his power is diminishing.

He likes worldlings to stay within the wheel of samsara. Once you intend to liberate yourself, he will certainly come to hinder you.

Once you break through the obstacles, he will admire and protect you.

But how can you make the breakthrough? By getting rid of the five poisons: greed, hatred, delusion, arrogance and doubt.

Taking any one poison will leave you in his tight grip. He will be there to trouble you.

If you are greedy, he will hook you with materials. If you desire wealth, he will present infinite treasures to retain you, and if you crave for lust, he will present attractive women to seduce you.

As long as there is a thought in your mind, he will manage to catch hold of you.

Chanting Amitabha Buddha is a wonderful method that the Pure Land school teaches us. It’s the only thing that he is unable to manifest.

In the mind of a Pure Land practitioner, everything else is let go utterly, except the name of Amitabha Buddha.

Mara will admire the one who chant the name of Amitabha Buddha with one-pointed concentration.

That's why we call Papiyas a Bodhisattva, because he is also a Bodhisattva. We neglect but not reject his temptations. Observing without seeing. Stick with the name of Amitabha Buddha, no wavering, no changing, and no falling back. Then the Pure Land is yours.

So upon receiving the delight, mental illness comes.

Once seduced by Mara’s temptation, you'll get sick, and stuck in the wheel of samsara with no way out.
